The small Austrian village of Fucking will finally get rid of its unfortunate name, which attracted tourists and was the reason for the frequent theft of signs. Mayor Andrea Holzner announced that the name will be changed to Fugging on January 1, 2021.
“I can confirm that the name of the village has been changed. “I do not want to add anything more, we have had a lot of media madness in the past,” said Holzner.
The small community of about 100 in Upper Austria has long advocated a name change, which supposedly dates back to the 11th century and has no meaning in German. Locals became frustrated with tourists taking pictures next to the signs, which were often stolen.
The village, north of Salzburg, near the German border, was unknown to the world and led a peaceful life until the advent of the internet, where it regularly made the list of places with the funniest names.
“We had had enough of the visitors and their bad jokes,” residents said.
